“Teen Swims Four Hours Through Shark-Infested Waters for Rescue”

Date:

A mother shared the challenging decision she had to make when her family encountered a dangerous situation in the sea filled with sharks. Joanne Appelbee instructed her 13-year-old son, Austin Appelbee, to paddle back to shore for help in his kayak. However, due to the rough conditions causing the kayak to take on water, Austin had to swim for four hours to seek assistance. Despite the risks, he even removed his lifejacket to make the exhausting swim through the turbulent waters.

Following hours of distress, Joanne and her two younger children were eventually rescued by authorities, who praised Austin as “superhuman.” Joanne revealed that instructing Austin to seek help was one of the toughest decisions she had ever made, acknowledging his strength and determination to handle the situation.

The incident occurred last week in Quindalup, located in southwest Western Australia, when strong winds pushed their inflatable paddleboards and kayak offshore from Geographe Bay. Recalling the ordeal, Austin described battling the rough seas while wearing a life jacket but eventually opting to swim without it for better efficiency. He utilized different swimming techniques to conserve energy and relied on positive thoughts, like memories of “Thomas the Tank Engine,” to stay focused during the challenging swim.

Upon reaching land, Austin collapsed from exhaustion but managed to run two kilometers to find help and alert authorities. His efforts were commended as “superhuman” by Paul Bresland, the Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue commander. A multi-agency search and rescue operation was initiated following the emergency report, involving water police, marine rescue volunteers, and a state rescue helicopter.

By 8:30 pm, Joanne, her 12-year-old son, and 8-year-old daughter were found 14 kilometers offshore, clinging to a paddleboard. They were successfully rescued by a volunteer marine rescue vessel. Paul Bresland praised the family’s extraordinary bravery, particularly highlighting the young boy’s determination to swim a considerable distance to seek help.

The rescue operation was described as exceptional, emphasizing the family’s courage and resilience in the face of adversity.
