Public Divided Over King Charles’ Controversial US Visit

Date:

King Charles is facing calls to scrap his upcoming state visit to the United States as nearly half of the British public opposes it, according to a recent poll. The monarch is set to journey to America in April to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary.

Although the palace has not officially confirmed the trip, credible sources within the royal circle indicate that both King Charles and Queen Camilla will soon make the trip to the US for a series of engagements with President Donald Trump on the East Coast. This royal visit is expected to be a significant event leading up to the July 4 Independence Day celebrations.

Amidst criticism following recent US-Israeli military actions in Iran, there is growing disapproval of the reported state visit. A YouGov poll revealed that 46% of respondents believe the visit should be called off, while 36% support its continuation, and 18% remain undecided.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has been pressured to intervene and halt the state visit, citing concerns about its appropriateness during ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. Political figures, including Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey, have echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the potential insensitivity of the visit given the current global situation.

Various politicians have expressed reservations about the visit, with Labour backbencher Rachael Maskell proposing a temporary hold on the trip until the Middle East crisis is addressed. Green Party deputy leader Rachel Millward also criticized the potential visit, labeling the US under Trump as a destabilizing force that should not be rewarded with a royal visit.

Calls to cancel the state visit emerged earlier this year when Trump threatened punitive tariffs on the UK over disagreements related to Greenland. Senior Conservative MP Simon Hoare publicly advocated for the visit’s cancellation, denouncing Trump’s behavior as unacceptable for diplomatic engagements.

While Trump has shown admiration for the royal family, viewing them as essential for maintaining diplomatic relations with the US, concerns persist regarding the timing and implications of the proposed state visit. In light of these reservations and public sentiment, the future of King Charles’ visit to the US remains uncertain.
