Hundreds of individuals were seen fleeing a beach in the United States after what seemed to be gunshots during spring break, as shown in footage shared on social media. The commotion that disrupted beachgoers enjoying spring break at Daytona Beach in Florida on March 14 was actually caused by people stepping on water bottles rather than gunfire.
Sheriff Mike Chitwood of Volusia County confirmed that there were no gunshots on the beach, following the video’s viral spread on March 16. Despite four reported shootings in Daytona Beach since Friday, none of them triggered the panic depicted in the video. Over the weekend, law enforcement made 80 arrests at Daytona Beach and seized six weapons.
The video capturing the incident, believed to be filmed from a hotel balcony, depicted beach visitors screaming and dispersing in fear. In a separate occurrence, a single shot was fired after a brawl broke out at a nearby bar on Friday, with no injuries reported.
Shortly after, an individual was shot outside a nearby Crunch Fitness. Additionally, two shootings were reported on the beachside on Saturday, with authorities looking into potential ties to spring break.
As investigations continue, law enforcement is examining whether any of the shootings are directly linked to the spring break activities.
