Keir Starmer responds to criticism from an MP regarding the UK-US special relationship following a recent statement by Donald Trump.
The US President criticized the UK Prime Minister for not allowing American planes to conduct initial strikes on Iran from British bases. This marked another instance of Mr. Trump’s criticisms towards the UK government, as he teamed up with Israel to attack Tehran over the weekend.
Mr. Starmer eventually agreed to permit the US to use British military bases for defensive strikes on Iranian missile sites to protect Middle Eastern countries.
During the PMQs session, Tory MP Gareth Bacon questioned the strength of the UK’s relationship with the US due to what he referred to as indecisiveness in response to Middle East events. In response, the PM emphasized the active collaboration between American and British forces at joint bases, highlighting the special relationship in action.
Mr. Starmer stressed the importance of maintaining a calm approach amidst the ongoing Middle East conflict, affirming the government’s commitment to prioritizing British lives, repatriating citizens, and safeguarding national interests.
He acknowledged the national concern regarding escalating tensions in the region and emphasized the need for a clear and purposeful approach with a composed mindset.
Initially, the UK had declined US access to air bases like Diego Garcia and RAF Fairford for strikes against Iran. Mr. Starmer maintained his stance of not committing to a conflict without a lawful basis and a well-thought-out plan.
Overall, the UK’s response to the crisis in the Middle East continues to be a topic of scrutiny and strategic consideration.
