“Icy Blast Forecast: Snow, Freezing Rain & Ice Pellets to Hit UK”

Date:

A recent weather forecast indicates the potential for icy conditions with ice pellets and freezing rain to impact the UK in the upcoming winter period.

According to GFS model maps, on February 1, the UK could experience a mix of snow and rain, particularly affecting regions like the West Midlands and the north-west, extending up to Belfast and Glasgow, where approximately half an inch of snowfall is expected early in the morning.

The forecast shows lighter snowfall in the north-east and areas of freezing rain in Snowdonia, with a possibility of thicker snow moving towards the north-east, East of England, and eastern Scotland later in the morning. Additionally, freezing rain pockets are likely to develop over the Peak District and around Ayr.

Areas near Carlisle and the Scottish Borders may witness ice pellets according to the weather maps, with snow expected to advance northwards to eastern Scotland by midday. Most parts of the UK, except for London and some areas in the south-east, are anticipated to be covered with rain. Freezing rain could affect locations like Loch Lomond and Northumberland.

In its extended forecast, the Met Office suggests a cooling trend from January 24 to February 2, bringing the likelihood of snowfall, particularly on hills in Scotland and northern England.

The Met Office explains that freezing rain forms when snow passes through warm and cold air layers, resulting in supercooled water droplets that fall as liquid, potentially creating icy patches on the ground. This phenomenon can pose various safety risks for transportation and infrastructure.

Ice pellets, on the other hand, are formed when partially melted snowflakes refreeze into grain-like particles in sub-freezing air, creating a denser covering on the ground. These pellets are smaller than hailstones, bounce upon impact, and are typically short-lived.
