“Silent Suffering: Women’s Struggle for Endometriosis Diagnosis”

Date:

For years, women have been dismissed by doctors when seeking help for severe menstrual pain and heavy bleeding. Many suffer from conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, which often go undiagnosed.

A recent survey I conducted revealed heartbreaking stories from women who face a lack of awareness, misdiagnoses, and a lack of urgency in addressing their health concerns. Endometriosis affects one in ten women, yet the average wait for a diagnosis is now over nine years, with even longer delays for Black and other ethnic minority women.

If one in ten men experienced similar pain, the response would likely be swift and supportive. However, for women, the journey to diagnosis is filled with pain, stigma, and little hope for a cure. Stories from the survey highlighted women’s struggles to be taken seriously by healthcare providers.

Despite these challenges, there is a growing awareness of endometriosis, thanks to public figures like Emma Barnett and impactful projects like the BAFTA-winning short film, “This Is Endometriosis.” Efforts are being made to address issues in women’s health, such as including menopause questions in NHS Health Checks and improving gynaecology services.

This International Women’s Day, during Endometriosis Action Month, we must break the silence around gynaecological conditions and push for better care and understanding. The upcoming launch of a new Women’s Health Strategy by the Labour government presents an opportunity to prioritize faster diagnoses and better training for healthcare professionals.

Women should not have to endure years of pain without proper treatment. It is essential to advocate for timely diagnosis, effective pain management, and support from all aspects of society. Addressing endometriosis is not just a medical issue but a matter of social justice, correcting historical injustices faced by women seeking healthcare.

By standing up for equitable treatment for women’s health, we embody the core values of the Labour party and work towards a future where all women receive the care and respect they deserve.
