Orcas Wikie and Keijo Face Peril in Crumbling Enclosure

Date:

A mother and son orca pair, Wikie, 23, and Keijo, 11, are in dire straits as they swim aimlessly in a decaying enclosure that poses a serious risk of collapsing on them. Formerly part of Marineland Antibes in southern France, which shut down in January 2025, the two whales are now the only remaining inhabitants in dismal conditions.

Efforts to relocate the orcas to a marine park in Japan were thwarted by a court ruling, leaving Wikie and Keijo isolated and lacking proper care. Although physically healthy, experts express concerns about their mental well-being and the deteriorating state of their environment.

Valentin Ducros, a whale specialist at Forward Global, emphasizes the urgent need to move the orcas to a functional facility for their welfare. Despite daily care by a minimal staff, the orcas receive little mental stimulation crucial for their social needs. The facility, under legal obligation to care for the orcas, has urged their immediate relocation due to welfare concerns.

Campaigning by animal rights groups led the French government to propose transferring Wikie and Keijo to a sanctuary in Nova Scotia, Canada, recognized as the most suitable and ethical option. While awaiting Marineland’s approval, this decision marks a significant move towards providing the orcas with a spacious and natural habitat.

However, concerns arise about the readiness of the Whale Sanctuary Project in Nova Scotia, prompting calls for temporary facilities tailored to the orcas’ requirements. The urgency to act stems from the deteriorating conditions at Marineland, which could endanger the orcas’ health and lead to tragic consequences if left unaddressed.

Various relocation options have been explored, with a recent veto of a move to Loro Parque in Tenerife due to inadequate facilities. Despite challenges, advocates push for the orcas’ transfer to the Canadian sanctuary, emphasizing the need for a suitable long-term home that prioritizes their well-being.

In the midst of these discussions, experts highlight the importance of addressing the orcas’ urgent situation and providing them with a safe and enriching environment without delay.
