An inquest revealed that a family was unaware that the bail restrictions on their 15-year-old son had expired two months before he was discovered deceased at his residence.
Tyrique Jemaa, a talented young footballer from Wythenshawe Amateurs, was arrested on June 30, 2023, and released on bail with specific conditions. Tragically, he was found dead at home on December 20, shortly after having a mobile phone confiscated at school earlier that day.
Despite being prohibited from using devices, including mobile phones, the inquest at Manchester Coroner’s Court disclosed that Tyrique’s bail had lapsed on October 1 after three months. However, neither he nor his family had been notified, with Coroner Zac Golumbeck citing “administrative oversights” and errors.
Greater Manchester Police informed Tuckers solicitors, who represented Tyrique, on November 15 – over a month post the bail expiration. Still, the family remained uninformed. Consequently, Tyrique and his family mistakenly believed he was still under bail conditions when, in reality, he was “released under investigation,” as reported by the Manchester Evening News.
During a police station visit on October 1, Tyrique and his family, unaware of the bail lapse, were told to return in the new year. His school, Dixons Brooklands Academy, was aware of the bail conditions but had not been informed of their expiration.
On the day of his demise, Tyrique was found with a phone at the school canteen, claiming it belonged to his brother and that he brought it in to return it. Subsequently, the school notified his mother of the potential breach of bail, prompting concerns.
Following these events, Tyrique returned home with a friend, engaging in light-hearted activities before being found deceased later that day. Testimony from his sister, Amira Jemaa, revealed Tyrique’s mixed emotions about a teacher’s statement regarding potential imprisonment.
Described as being “down” by school friends on his final school day, Tyrique exhibited a note at home expressing inner struggles. The subsequent investigation by GMP revealed administrative oversights and a lack of formal extension of bail conditions beyond the initial three-month period.
Despite efforts by Tuckers to follow up on the bail conditions, GMP considered their actions sufficient, only notifying Tyrique’s legal team of the situation. A heartfelt tribute from Tyrique’s family highlighted his vibrant personality and various talents, expressing the irreplaceable loss felt by his loved ones.
The circumstances of Tyrique’s arrest remained undisclosed, emphasizing that he had not faced any charges at the time of his unfortunate passing. Ongoing proceedings are in place to address the situation.
