Recent cases of Nipah virus infection have raised concerns about the potential for a future pandemic, following the death of a woman who contracted the virus. Health authorities in Bangladesh confirmed the woman’s death, highlighting the low survival rate associated with the virus, ranging from 40 to 75 percent.
The woman, aged between 40 and 50, fell ill in northern Bangladesh on January 21, displaying symptoms such as headache, fever, muscle cramps, and loss of appetite before her condition deteriorated. Initially reported in India, Nipah cases have now spread to Bangladesh, prompting alerts from UK health officials over fears of wider transmission.
Despite no recent travel history, the woman had consumed raw palm sap, a known source of the virus due to potential bat contamination. The incubation period for Nipah virus can vary from four to 21 days, with symptoms resembling flu-like illness or fever, potentially leading to pneumonia and respiratory complications.
In severe cases, individuals may develop brain inflammation or meningitis within three to 21 days after initial symptoms, often resulting in high mortality rates. Survivors of Nipah infection may experience lasting neurological issues, including seizures and personality changes, with rare instances of virus reactivation years later.
Transmission of Nipah virus can occur through direct contact with infected animals or consumption of contaminated fruit products like raw date palm juice. Person-to-person spread is also possible through close contact with infected individuals or their bodily fluids, particularly documented in family care settings in Bangladesh and India.
As of now, no cases of Nipah virus infection have been reported in the UK.
