Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, has urged the Labour Party to include a commitment to overturn Brexit in its agenda for the upcoming general election. Khan emphasized the need for rejoining the European Union due to escalating global uncertainties and the election of Donald Trump, stating that it should be a fundamental Labour policy.
In an interview with Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Sir Sadiq outlined a strategy for strengthening ties with the EU, condemning the adverse effects of exiting the union. He proposed rejoining both the customs union and the single market as part of his plan.
Highlighting the negative impacts of Brexit on London and its residents economically, socially, and culturally, Khan stressed the necessity for the UK to rejoin the EU. He insisted that Labour should run in the next general election with a clear promise to rejoin the European Union, citing changing circumstances and global instability as reasons for this move.
Referring to the current US administration and global instability, Khan deemed Europe as the UK’s primary security partner. He called on Prime Minister Keir Starmer and the Labour Party to commit to rejoining the EU in the upcoming elections to ensure the country’s stability and security.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves also warned about the risks of remaining isolated between trading blocs post-Brexit, advocating for closer alignment with the EU to benefit the UK economy. Since taking office, Keir Starmer has aimed to improve trade relations with the EU and stressed the importance of making the relationship work for the British people.
The UK and EU aim to finalize agreements on various issues, including a youth mobility scheme and establishing common areas for trade and emissions by their next summit. Despite some discussions about rejoining the customs union, Downing Street reaffirmed that the UK would not return to it or the single market, citing existing trade agreements as essential.
