An inquest revealed that a fit amateur soccer player succumbed to a flesh-eating infection after medical professionals failed to recognize his condition as a severe illness. Luke Abrahams, aged 20, tragically passed away from sepsis and necrotising fasciitis at Northampton General Hospital on January 23, 2023. Initially complaining of a sore throat, he was prescribed antibiotics for tonsillitis by his GP.
Despite his worsening state and debilitating leg pain, an out-of-hours doctor misdiagnosed him with sciatica on January 20. Subsequently, when Luke’s family called emergency services due to his severe pain, the ambulance crew determined he did not require immediate hospitalization despite concerning symptoms.
Two days later, Luke was rushed to the hospital, expressing unbearable pain, and sadly passed away the following day. The post mortem examination revealed he had been battling septicaemia, Lemierre syndrome, and necrotising fasciitis.
Initially deemed as natural causes, his parents have been advocating for a thorough investigation, citing multiple missed opportunities by medical professionals that may have prevented his untimely death.
During the inquest, it was acknowledged that Luke should have been hospitalized earlier and not discharged home, especially when he was inaccurately diagnosed with sciatica. The medical team failed to recognize the severity of his condition despite repeated contacts with various healthcare providers.
Further testimonies revealed that crucial warning signs, including high blood glucose levels and an elevated heart rate, were overlooked, leading to a delayed response in providing appropriate care. Despite displaying concerning symptoms, Luke was not promptly classified as needing urgent hospital admission.
The medical team admitted to a lack of comprehensive assessment and appropriate prioritization of Luke’s condition, prompting the need for additional training on identifying critical infections such as sepsis and necrotising fasciitis. The inquest continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Luke’s tragic demise.
