“Iran Denies US Talks, Alleges Misinformation Campaign”

Date:

The Speaker of Iran’s parliament dismissed reports regarding discussions between the US and Iran as untrue.

Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf stated in a message on X on Monday that no talks had occurred with the US. He alleged that false information was being used to impact financial and oil markets and help the US and Israel escape their predicament.

President Donald Trump asserted in a post on Truth Social earlier the same day that the US and Iran had engaged in “productive talks” regarding a comprehensive solution to the Middle East conflict. Various sources reported that Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, had been negotiating with Ghalibaf before the latter’s statement.

Iran’s Fars News Agency also refuted any negotiation claims. Through a Telegram post, it suggested that significant events were planned for that evening targeting Tel Aviv and some regional allies of the US and Israel. These events were said to eliminate any hopes of negotiation from the aggressors’ minds.

The spokesperson of Iran’s Foreign Ministry reiterated via the state-run IRNA news agency that there had been no discussions with the US. Esmail Baghaei emphasized that Iran’s stance on the Strait of Hormuz and the conditions for ending the conflict remained unchanged.

According to IRNA, Baghaei mentioned that messages had been received from “friendly nations indicating a US proposal for talks aimed at resolving the conflict.”

This development followed Trump’s announcement that due to the discussions, he extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while also postponing any strikes on power plants in Iran for five days. Trump had initially given Iran a 48-hour ultimatum to reopen the strait on Saturday night.

The financial markets reacted positively to Trump’s statement on Monday, with oil prices decreasing and stock values climbing on Wall Street.

Since the conflict began on February 28, over 1,500 individuals in Iran have lost their lives in US-Israeli airstrikes. In Lebanon, more than 1,000 casualties have occurred due to Israeli attacks, leading to over a million displacements, as
