Police authorities in the United States have made public the bodycam footage capturing the arrest of golf icon Tiger Woods. The legendary golfer faced charges of driving under the influence following a rollover car accident in Martin County, Florida last week.
Despite being 50 years old, Woods has pled not guilty and obtained approval to depart from the U.S. to seek treatment at an international rehabilitation center. He also issued a statement acknowledging the gravity of the situation.
The released body camera video from the Martin County Sheriff’s Office depicts the moment of Woods’ arrest at the scene of the overturned vehicle. In the footage, Woods can be seen kneeling and conversing with law enforcement officers.
Woods recounted, “I looked down at my phone and then suddenly, boom.” Subsequently, officers conducted a pat-down on Woods to check for injuries.
During the incident, the other driver involved in the crash was asked who was at fault, to which they indicated Woods as the responsible party.
Additional footage shows Woods, attired in a blue polo shirt, appearing to doze off in the back of a law enforcement vehicle. Although he passed a breathalyzer test, he declined to provide a urine sample and confessed to using pain medication.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Woods expressed his awareness of the seriousness of the situation and announced his decision to step away temporarily for treatment and wellness focus.
Expected to lead Team USA at the upcoming Ryder Cup in Ireland, Woods has since declined the captaincy following his arrest, as confirmed by the PGA of America.
On Thursday, a judge from the Martin County Court sanctioned Woods’ admission into an international rehab facility based on his attorney’s argument that he required specialized care outside the U.S. due to privacy concerns affecting his treatment.
The PGA of America applauded Woods for prioritizing his health and accepted his decision to forego the captaincy for the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup team.
In the court proceedings, attorney Douglas Duncan emphasized the necessity for Woods to receive treatment abroad due to the complexity of his clinical condition and the privacy challenges he faced in the U.S.
