A tragic incident unfolded in an Indian village as a group of 18 elephants rampaged through homes during the night, resulting in the death of a three-month-old infant and severe injuries to another individual. The infant and three family members perished when the massive elephants charged through the village, claiming a total of six lives.
Vikas Kumar Ujjwal, the Divisional Forest Officer of Hazaribagh East, confirmed the distressing event, stating that four members of a family were among the deceased. He also mentioned that a child sustained serious injuries and was hospitalized at Sadar Hospital in Hazaribagh for treatment.
The village residents were left in terror as the elephants charged through the sleeping community around midnight, causing destruction and chaos. Witnesses described the elephants as sudden destroyers, flattening homes, and belongings, resulting in the sole survival of an elderly woman from her household.
Ujjwal advised the community to be cautious and avoid wooded areas, highlighting that the elephant herd had been roaming in neighboring districts. Authorities have installed loudspeakers to alert residents of potential danger and ensure monitoring of the situation. Grieving families are assured compensation under government regulations for their losses.
Local MLA Nirmal Mahato expressed dismay over the tragic event, emphasizing the need for decisive action to prevent such incidents. The incident sheds light on the ongoing human-elephant conflict in Jharkhand, where migration patterns often lead elephants into human settlements, escalating the risk of encounters.
