A judge condemned a drug kingpin as a heartless tyrant who sacrificed his own family’s well-being, sentencing his criminal syndicate to nearly five decades behind bars.
Lee Rigby schemed to saturate North Wales with cocaine and enlisted family members, including his son driven by a desire to impress his father, stated Judge Nicola Jones at Caernarfon Crown Court. Despite presenting himself as a legitimate entrepreneur, the cockle harvester engaged in sourcing and distributing substantial amounts of cocaine, ketamine, and cannabis.
Law enforcement employed surveillance techniques and a listening device to dismantle the operation, characterized by the judge as disorganized. Rigby funneled profits into bank accounts during frequent trips to Thailand, splurging on properties, boats, and vehicles.
During the sentencing, Judge Jones criticized Rigby as a domineering and callous figure who led a chaotic group. She highlighted how Rigby pushed his son Wesley, aged 17 or 18, into criminal activities in a misguided quest for paternal approval. She also noted Rigby’s history of convictions, which included violent offenses and an odd cockle poaching incident resulting in a £3,000 fine.
In a court session on May 12, 2025, various individuals were sentenced for their roles in supporting the syndicate. The prosecution resulted in a cumulative prison term of 47 years and five months.
Detective Chief Inspector Richard Sidney, the lead investigator, emphasized the destructive impact of drugs on individuals and communities, praising the dismantling of the drug network in Flintshire. He underscored the commitment to combat drug trafficking and urged community cooperation in reporting illicit activities to law enforcement or anonymously through Crimestoppers.
