“Putin’s Propaganda: Inside Russia’s Authoritarian Schools”

Date:

A recent documentary has shed light on Vladimir Putin’s systematic indoctrination of Russian schoolchildren, offering a glimpse into the authoritarian educational system in the country.

Titled “Mr. Nobody Against Putin,” the film exposes the transformation of young students in a Siberian town into miniature Russian soldiers, as they march through school corridors pledging allegiance to the Kremlin. The footage was captured secretly over a period of two and a half years by Pavel “Pasha” Talankin, a former teacher who was later forced into exile.

Co-directed by filmmaker David Borenstein and Talankin, the documentary provides an inside look at a secondary school in Karabash, where Talankin worked as a videographer. The filming coincided with the implementation of new educational directives from the Russian Education Ministry aimed at instilling unwavering loyalty to the Kremlin.

One striking scene in the documentary showcases operatives from the Wagner mercenary army demonstrating combat techniques and introducing students to weapons during a school event. Despite the risks involved, Talankin remained dedicated to the film’s underlying message, emphasizing that true patriotism goes beyond mere symbols and propaganda.

Expressing his concerns in the documentary, Talankin, who studied film in Chelyabinsk, highlighted his reluctance to be a tool of the regime despite his love for his job. His covert documentation of the propaganda efforts intensified as Putin’s military actions in Ukraine escalated, turning the school into a hub for promoting the ongoing conflict.

The documentary further reveals that students engage in activities such as grenade-throwing competitions, attend weekly patriotic classes, and witness peers receiving conscription notices. Following the conclusion of the 2024 academic year, Talankin fled to Istanbul, where he met Borenstein in person for the first time.

Borenstein cautioned that Putin’s influence on Russia’s youth is steering them towards a future centered on warfare and imperialism, extending beyond the current conflict in Ukraine.
