Following advice from doctors to stretch her leg due to pain, a woman found herself facing an uncommon form of amputation after receiving a shocking diagnosis. Courtney Echerd initially experienced discomfort in her left leg, which was not initially concerning until a physiotherapist observed a significant decrease in flexibility during a follow-up appointment.
After undergoing X-ray and MRI scans and consulting with an oncologist, the 30-year-old was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of bone cancer. She was informed that her leg was beyond saving and that she would require an amputation, including part of her pelvis, in what is considered an extremely rare procedure.
Expressing her fear, Courtney, a digital media professional residing in Los Angeles, said, “I was utterly terrified. I had assumed I would endure a few months of chemotherapy, overcome it, and resume my normal life. The possibility of amputation never crossed my mind.”
Courtney’s health issues began innocuously in December 2021 when she first noticed leg pain. She recalled, “I also realized I could no longer reach my toes and had lost the ability to touch my feet with ease, which I could previously do effortlessly.”
During a train ride, she discovered a small lump on her lower back and promptly revisited her physiotherapist, who noted a concerning change in her flexibility. Subsequent tests and consultations led to the cancer diagnosis.
Despite initial lack of concern, Courtney later realized the gravity of her situation. She disclosed, “I underestimated the severity of the situation because I associated seeing an oncologist with a low probability of having cancer, not understanding that such a referral almost certainly indicated cancer.”
Following a biopsy, which confirmed the diagnosis, Courtney faced the possibility of leg amputation post-chemotherapy. Despite her efforts to prevent it, a full amputation known as a hemipelvectomy became necessary, occurring in January 2024, over two years after her health concerns emerged.
Struggling to adapt to life post-surgery, Courtney lamented, “Every aspect of my life has changed drastically. There’s much to mourn about my current situation and future prospects. Walking was a cherished activity for me, and it’s uncertain if I will ever fully overcome its loss.”
Currently residing with her parents, Courtney receives care from her mother, who assists with daily tasks. Despite her desire for independence, Courtney experiences persistent nerve pain resulting from the surgery.
