“Tragedy Strikes on Hobbit Farm: 27 Animals, Including Rainbow the Pony, Perish”

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded on a farm utilized during the filming of The Hobbit, where up to 27 animals, including a beloved miniature pony named Rainbow, met their demise in what was described as a hazardous environment for livestock.

According to accounts from wranglers involved in the film trilogy, the deaths of the animals were attributed to the conditions on the farm, leading up to the release of the movie in 2012, with allegations pointing towards the responsibility of the production company.

In response to the incidents, the production company emphasized their prompt actions following the fatalities of two horses, highlighting that director Peter Jackson even took in three pigs used in the filming process.

Animal handlers voiced concerns about the dangerous landscape at the New Zealand property where the animals were housed, citing risks like steep terrain, sinkholes, and inadequate fencing as contributing factors to the high casualty rate.

One of the wranglers, Chris Langridge, who worked as a horse trainer on the set, described the farm as filled with hazards, recounting the unfortunate incident where Rainbow, a miniature pony, sustained fatal injuries after a fall.

Efforts were made to mitigate the risks, with Langridge attempting to safeguard the animals from potential dangers, but the challenges proved overwhelming, leading to further casualties among the livestock.

While acknowledging the animal deaths, the production company clarified that some were due to natural causes, and measures were implemented to prevent future incidents, particularly focusing on providing safer conditions for the animals.

Subsequent accounts from the wranglers detailed additional unfortunate events, including the injury of a horse named Doofus and the deaths of other animals due to various circumstances, raising concerns about the overall welfare of the animals on the farm.

Despite conflicting reports, efforts were made to address the issues and improve the conditions for the animals, prompting changes in the management of the farm and the relocation of the remaining animals in the care of the production company.
