In a shocking incident at the Airways Heights Corrections Center in Washington, a 25-year-old inmate, Shane Goldsby, brutally attacked his cellmate, 70-year-old Robert Munger, on June 2, 2020. Goldsby’s actions were reportedly fueled by the realization that Munger was the individual who had sexually assaulted his younger sister. Munger was serving a lengthy sentence for child rape, child molestation, and possession of child pornography.
Goldsby expressed disbelief at being confined in the same cell as the man who had harmed his sister, describing the situation as akin to a highly improbable occurrence. Despite Goldsby’s repeated requests for a cell change due to escalating tensions fueled by Munger’s discussions about his crimes, prison officials failed to act upon his appeals. Goldsby also claimed that his emergency calls for help before the attack went unanswered, leading him to believe that the incident was allowed to happen deliberately.
Following the tragic event, Goldsby was sentenced to an additional 298 months in prison for the murder. Despite the severity of his actions, Goldsby expressed remorse to Munger’s family through a statement read out by his lawyer. In the statement, he conveyed his deep regret and apologized for the pain he caused, acknowledging the irrevocable loss experienced by Munger’s loved ones.
The court proceedings also shed light on Goldsby’s troubled past, marked by abuse and instability. Raised by a drug-dependent mother and subjected to harsh conditions, he endured a tumultuous childhood that included multiple foster placements. Despite these challenges, his life took a dark turn when he reunited with his mother and became ensnared in drug abuse, ultimately leading to his incarceration and the fateful encounter with Munger.
The Washington Department of Corrections described the incident as regrettable and complex, noting that existing protocols should have prevented Goldsby and Munger from sharing a cell. However, the lack of knowledge about their connection at the time of placement led to the tragic outcome.
