Tens of thousands of individuals encountered an issue with the widely-used streaming platform YouTube. The problem was observed in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia.
Users noted that while individual videos were playable, the YouTube homepage appeared blank. YouTube acknowledged the issue in a public statement and confirmed that it has been resolved.
In a message on social media, YouTube expressed gratitude for user reports during the resolution process. The platform disclosed that a glitch in their recommendation system caused the videos not to display properly across various YouTube sections, including the homepage and other related platforms like YouTube Music and YouTube Kids.
Additionally, YouTube assured users that they are actively addressing the situation. Data from Downdetector, a site that aggregates user reports, indicated that there were 37,136 complaints about the YouTube malfunction at 1:16 am in the UK on February 18.
A Reddit user shared their experience, mentioning being unexpectedly logged out after finishing a video. Another user reported an issue with logging in but could still access subscriptions without seeing their feed.
The company advised that their teams are investigating the problem further.
