The Prime Minister is set to give an update at 10am on the government’s efforts to assist households in managing rising living costs amidst the ongoing US-Israel confrontation with Iran. The prolonged conflict, now in its fifth week, has significantly increased global energy prices and raised concerns about potential fuel shortages.
The Iranian blockade of the critical shipping passage, the Strait of Hormuz, may also affect food supplies due to disruptions in fertilizer shipments from Gulf nations. Despite this, the government has reassured the public that there are currently no immediate issues regarding petrol availability and advised citizens to continue refueling as usual.
This development comes after Mr. Starmer convened a high-level meeting in Whitehall on Tuesday evening to address the rapidly evolving situation in the region. Earlier, the unpredictable US President, Donald Trump, distanced himself from the conflict, urging the UK and other allies to secure their own oil supply.
In a heated statement, Mr. Trump asserted that he had already taken decisive military action against Iran and now expected allies to handle the aftermath by reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Downing Street confirmed that the Prime Minister is actively collaborating with allies to advocate for a reduction in tensions in the Middle East conflict, as this is seen as the most effective way to alleviate domestic price pressures.
Moreover, he is anticipated to highlight the cost of living measures introduced in the November Budget that are coming into effect today. These measures include a wage increase for millions of minimum wage workers, a £117 average reduction in the energy price cap until June, and a freeze on prescription charges.
