“Emergency Response: Inmates Fall Ill, Ambulances Rushed”

Date:

Eight ambulances were swiftly deployed to a correctional facility following a sudden illness outbreak among several inmates on the previous day.

Medical personnel responded to HMP Rochester, a Young Offenders Institution in Kent catering to individuals over 18 years old, after prison staff dialed 999 for assistance. The affected prisoners received immediate treatment at the facility, and an official inquiry has been initiated.

A representative from the prison service disclosed, “Following an incident at HMP Rochester on January 22, a group of inmates fell ill. Emergency services arrived promptly and administered aid on-site. An investigation is currently underway, and it would be premature to provide further details at this stage.”

According to a witness account reported by KentOnline, individuals were collapsing rapidly, prompting the dispatch of eight ambulances to the prison.

This development follows a commitment by authorities to enhance security measures and reduce incidents of self-harm after a tumultuous period marked by challenges, including pest issues. Inspectors highlighted the prison’s unsanitary conditions, deteriorating infrastructure, and prevalent illicit drug use.

A review published during the summer indicated a peak in violence in August 2024 with 29 recorded incidents, which subsequently decreased to 12 incidents by March 2025.

Speaking on behalf of IMB Rochester, a spokesperson remarked, “The past reporting year has presented exceptional trials for HMP Rochester. Progress is evident due to the remarkable adaptability displayed by all personnel at the facility, yet there is still work to be done for stabilization.”

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson stated, “Dedicated efforts have been made to enhance HMP Rochester, and we are encouraged by the acknowledgment in the report of the prison’s success in addressing safety concerns, notably the decline in violence and self-harm incidents.”

Acknowledging the need for further action to curb drug availability, the spokesperson added that measures have been implemented to disrupt drug supplies, including an upgraded CCTV system and improved cell windows to prevent illicit substances from entering the prison.
