A woman accused of assisting her son in cleaning a crime scene was denied bail today. Suzanne Love, hailing from East Belfast, Northern Ireland, is currently held at Hybebank Wood Women’s Prison, facing charges of obstructing justice and aiding criminals. Her request for bail was rejected after seeking permission to retrieve personal belongings from her former residence.
The charges stem from allegations that she participated in eliminating evidence following the fatal beating of Kathryn Parton at her home. Love’s son, Jamie Love, aged 26, stands accused of committing the murder at Ms. Parton’s Madrid Street residence on May 9, 2024. Parton’s body was found in her bedroom nearly a week later, with a postmortem revealing that the 34-year-old, known as Kat, succumbed to hemorrhaging, scalp lacerations, and nasal fractures from a severe assault to the head without the use of weapons.
Authorities believe Parton remained undiscovered for six days until her father visited the property out of concern for her well-being. Another individual, 23-year-old Reece Oliver from Castleton Gardens, is also implicated in aiding an offender by driving Suzanne Love to Ms. Parton’s residence to help her son pack up and leave on the night of the alleged murder.
During a compassionate bail plea at Belfast Crown Court, Love’s defense solicitor, Philip Breen, highlighted her desire to briefly leave prison to retrieve personal items like photos and clothing from her soon-to-be repossessed home on Isoline Street. Breen emphasized that the Housing Executive, handling the property clearance, might discard items perceived as damp or moldy, potentially including the belongings Love wishes to recover.
Prosecution counsel Rosemary Walsh KC opposed the bail application, citing previous refusals and suggesting that other relatives or friends could retrieve the mentioned items on Love’s behalf. Walsh raised concerns about Love’s potential flight risk and interference with witnesses, pointing to her involvement in aiding her son post the crime.
Ultimately, Madam Justice McBride declined the bail request, noting that alternative individuals could collect the personal effects and expressing concerns about the defendant’s likelihood of reoffending and evading custody.
