“UK Braces for Heavy Snow in Three Regions”

Date:

Britons have been cautioned about upcoming wintry conditions as heavy snow is expected in three main regions before next Tuesday. The country is currently experiencing Storm Ingrid, identified by the Portuguese weather service, which is causing rain and strong winds in south-west England and Wales. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning until 9 am tomorrow. Additionally, a rain alert is in effect for central and eastern Scotland until 9 am on Sunday.

The UK has been impacted by low-pressure systems moving in from the Atlantic in recent weeks, resulting in unsettled conditions and snow in areas where cold air from the Arctic meets.

According to the Met Office, the weather will remain unsettled across much of the UK, with cold air bringing the potential for wintry hazards in the north. Three areas are highlighted for possible snow flurries: eastern Scotland, the north-east, and northern hills.

Tonight, bands of rain are expected to move northward across the country, with further hill snow likely in eastern Scotland. Later, frequent showers are anticipated in the southwest, accompanied by coastal gales.

Looking ahead to Saturday, rain and hill snow in the northeast are expected to ease. Showers may merge into longer spells of rain at times in other regions, particularly in the southwest. Widespread windy conditions with coastal gales are forecasted.

The Met Office predicts that conditions will turn colder from Sunday to Tuesday, with bands of rain moving across the country. Colder temperatures from the northeast increase the risk of snow, particularly in northern hills.

Met Office Chief Forecaster Andy Page emphasized the continuation of unsettled weather across the UK, with heavy rain in parts of Scotland, snow on higher ground, and strong winds and heavy rain in southwestern England and southern Wales. While the weekend will be windy, brighter and drier intervals are expected with passing showers.

Looking at the start of next week, the Met Office forecasts a brief quieter period on Monday with patches of fog. Later in the day, a new frontal system will bring rain into Northern Ireland and western Britain. As this front meets colder air from the east, snow is possible over higher ground in various regions.

Weather maps from WXCharts indicate significant snowfall in parts of central Scotland tonight, with up to 50cm settling on the ground. Similar snowy conditions are expected tomorrow in northern parts of the UK as wet weather bands associated with Storm Ingrid move in.

By Tuesday, another low-pressure system is anticipated to arrive from the Atlantic, bringing heavy snowfall, especially in northern areas. WXCharts maps also show snow flurries expected in England and Wales.
