After undergoing maintenance works that cost over £8 million, the Rainbow Bridge, known as the “scariest” bridge, has reopened to the public. This cantilever bridge spans the Neches River in southeast Texas, connecting Port Arthur and Bridge City. The bridge has gained significant attention online due to its steep incline and high arch designed to avoid interference with shipping, providing a vertical clearance of 177 feet.
Motorists navigating the narrow lanes of the bridge experience a dramatic drive between Jefferson and Orange counties, as the bridge has been operating as a one-way westbound traffic route since 1997. In March of last year, the bridge was closed for major maintenance, with a contract worth $10.9 million awarded to Southern Road and Bridge, based in Florida.
The extensive maintenance work included a full-depth concrete deck restoration, steel railing repairs, and the replacement of 1,200 rivets and four steel member pins. During the closure, motorists had to reroute through the nearby Veterans Memorial Bridge, which temporarily accommodated the diverted traffic.
The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed the completion of the maintenance on March 26, followed by a thorough inspection before reopening the bridge to traffic on April 11. The Rainbow Bridge construction initially commenced in 1936 and was completed after a two-year period.
In a separate development, the Jumeirah Burj Al Arab hotel in the UAE announced a temporary 18-month closure for a renovation aimed at enhancing its iconic décor. The closure was not linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East involving US-Israeli forces and Iran, which has resulted in Iranian drone strikes in the Gulf region, including Dubai. Reports suggest that these strikes have led to an exodus of foreign expats and tourists from the area.
