A woman endured nearly a year of persistent diarrhoea after consuming a contaminated bag of pork scratchings during a widespread food poisoning incident. Ruanda Davis, aged 64, fell seriously ill shortly after consuming Mr Porky pork scratchings in June 2021. Subsequently diagnosed with Salmonella, she was part of a nationwide outbreak affecting hundreds of individuals.
The affected Mr Porky products, produced by Tayto Group Ltd in Bolton, were recalled in September 2021 following reports of 179 cases of diarrhoea, vomiting, and fever. Over 100 people reported becoming unwell after consuming the snacks.
Ruanda, residing in Cardiff, described the illness as the worst she had experienced, with lingering effects till today. Suffering severe symptoms shortly after consuming the pork scratchings, her disability and limited mobility made it challenging to manage the abrupt gastric distress.
The following morning, she suffered a fall while attempting to get out of bed, leading to a head injury. Rushed to the hospital, she spent five days receiving intravenous fluids for dehydration, with subsequent tests confirming a Salmonella infection.
While the vomiting eventually ceased, Ruanda continued to battle diarrhoea and disrupted bowel function for almost a year post-hospital discharge. Reflecting on her ordeal, she shared the life-altering impact of the experience, emphasizing the importance of food safety and caution in dietary choices.
Tayto Group Ltd faced legal repercussions, pleading guilty to placing unsafe food on the market and failing to safeguard food from contamination. In a civil case led by Irwin Mitchell, Ruanda and others received compensation through an out-of-court settlement exceeding £300,000, despite the company denying liability.
Irwin Mitchell’s public health lawyer, Nadhia Akthar, stressed the severe consequences of contaminated food, emphasizing the prolonged health issues and potential fatality associated with bacterial illnesses like Salmonella. The settlements aimed to provide ongoing support for affected individuals.
Following the legal proceedings, Tayto Group expressed regret for the harm caused and acknowledged the seriousness of the incident. The company took immediate corrective actions, including a voluntary product recall and enhanced safety protocols, to prevent future occurrences and ensure the highest food safety standards.
The commitment to learning from the incident and prioritizing food safety remains at the forefront for Tayto Group, aiming to deliver uncompromised standards consistently.
