Eight individuals lost their lives in a tragic mass drowning incident when a tour bus carrying tourists crashed through the ice surface and into a cold lake. The bus, filled with Chinese nationals, sank into Lake Baikal, the world’s oldest and deepest freshwater lake in southern Siberia. Among the casualties were seven tourists, including a 14-year-old, and the bus driver, while one person managed to escape the vehicle, as confirmed by the regional governor, Igor Kobzev.
Emergency services had to utilize cameras to locate the victims in the relatively shallow part of the lake before commencing a diving operation. The Russian emergencies ministry disclosed that the bus fell into a 10-foot-wide icy crevasse, descending approximately 60 feet deep into the lake. Due to the frigid water temperatures, rescuers had to deploy underwater cameras before initiating the rescue operation.
Following the tragic deaths, regional prosecutors initiated a criminal investigation, with reports suggesting that the bus was operated by an unregistered company. This incident is a significant setback for local tourism, which had been thriving under an agreement between Moscow and Beijing allowing visa-free travel. Lake Baikal, a popular destination attracting millions of visitors annually, especially from China, experienced a slight decline in tourism numbers in the preceding year.
The recent fatal accident at Baikal adds to a series of similar incidents in the region, prompting a stern warning from Governor Kobzev about the perilous nature of the lake’s ice. He emphasized the prohibition and extreme risk associated with venturing onto Lake Baikal’s frozen surface. Previous incidents involving trapped individuals on the ice have underscored the dangers of such activities, with one incident resulting in the death of a Chinese tourist in a car mishap on the frozen lake.
