A tragic incident occurred when a bus carrying 44 passengers veered off a mountain road in Nepal, resulting in the death of 19 individuals, including a 24-year-old British national. The accident took place near Behighat in Dhading district, west of Kathmandu, as the bus was en route from Pokhara to the Nepalese capital. The bus plunged 650 feet down a slope after leaving the Prithvi Highway.
In addition to the fatalities, 25 individuals sustained injuries, with one of them being a Chinese national who is receiving treatment at the National Trauma Centre in Kathmandu. The authorities are working to identify all the deceased, as only nine have been named so far. A search operation is ongoing for a missing Chinese national.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the crash site to rescue survivors and provide medical care. The cause of the tragic accident is under investigation by the authorities. The Foreign Office confirmed that they are assisting the family of the deceased British individual and are liaising with local officials.
Nepal has seen a high number of bus accidents annually, often attributed to poorly maintained roads and vehicles. The terrain of the Himalayan country, characterized by mountains and narrow, winding roads, presents additional challenges for transportation safety.
In a separate incident in 2024, two buses carrying a total of 65 people were swept into the Trishuli river by a landslide, resulting in fatalities and missing persons. The wreckage of one of the buses was recently discovered buried in sand.
