Reflecting on the harrowing experience, Alina shared her gratitude for surviving the attack in Balakliia, a city in northeast Ukraine that was under Russian control for six months. Forced to flee with her husband and 9-year-old daughter after their home was damaged in the assault, Alina described the close call that prompted their escape.
The family, preparing for a meal four years prior, was abruptly forced to abandon their food when the attack struck. With their home damaged and no time to seek shelter, they quickly made the decision to leave, taking only essential belongings before driving away unharmed. Alina expressed a sense of divine protection during the ordeal but acknowledged that not everyone shared their fortune.
Despite being liberated, Balakliia has continued to endure aerial attacks, with the scars of Russia’s occupation still visible in the city. Reports of illegal detentions and torture by Russian forces have left a lasting impact on the community, with many residents subjected to inhumane treatment during the occupation.
While the wounds of the past linger, signs of healing are emerging in Balakliia. Alina, who gave birth to her daughter shortly after the conflict, has returned with her family to rebuild their lives. Seeking support at a UNICEF Resilience Centre, Alina and her children are undergoing therapy to cope with the emotional aftermath of the war. She emphasized the importance of such programs in helping families navigate the trauma they’ve experienced.
