Two individuals have lost their lives, and 19 others have been admitted to the hospital following a chemical spill at a facility in West Virginia. The incident occurred due to a sudden chemical reaction at the Catalyst Refiners plant, a silver recovery establishment in Institute. According to Kanawha County Commission Emergency Management Director C.W. Sigman, the leak happened around 9:30 am EDT on Wednesday.
The chemical reaction involved nitric acid and another substance, resulting in the production of highly toxic hydrogen sulphide gas. This caused a violent chemical reaction that was described as instantaneous and dangerous by Sigman, who emphasized the risks associated with initiating or concluding chemical reactions.
As per Kanawha County Commission President Ben Salango, one person is in critical condition, and among the injured are seven ambulance workers who responded to the incident. Additional individuals were transported to hospitals in private vehicles or unconventional means like a garbage truck, as mentioned by Sigman.
Vandalia Health Charleston Area Medical Centre, a local hospital, received multiple patients exhibiting respiratory symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, sore throat, and itchy eyes. Patients are currently undergoing evaluation in the emergency department.
A shelter-in-place directive was issued for the nearby area and was lifted over five hours later following a large-scale decontamination process. This operation required individuals to discard their clothing and undergo a thorough spray-down.
