In a quaint village in north-west Germany, a unassuming computer technician named Armin Meiwes was known as a helpful neighbor, always ready to lend a hand when needed. However, beneath this facade lurked a dark secret that would shock the public.
Meiwes harbored disturbing desires stemming from his childhood, which involved consuming another person as a means of control and intimacy. In the late 1990s, he sought out like-minded individuals online and eventually connected with Bernd Brandes in 2001.
Brandes, a 43-year-old engineer from Berlin, responded to an online ad seeking a volunteer to be eaten. After extensive discussions about boundaries and consent, the two men arranged to meet at Meiwes’ secluded home.
On a fateful night in March, Brandes consumed pills and alcohol before Meiwes proceeded to mutilate him, eventually leading to his death. Meiwes dismembered Brandes, storing parts in his freezer and burying his skull in the garden. Over the following months, Meiwes cooked and consumed a significant amount of Brandes’ flesh.
Meiwes later shared the gruesome details of the incident in a documentary, describing his meal of human flesh in chilling detail. Despite claiming that Brandes had consented to the act, Meiwes was charged with manslaughter and initially sentenced to eight and a half years.
After an appeal, Meiwes was retried and convicted of murder, receiving a life sentence. Experts expressed concerns about his potential for reoffending due to his fantasies of consuming human flesh. Interestingly, Meiwes has now renounced meat and adopted a vegetarian lifestyle in prison.
