The latest promotional move by Reform has sparked a growing crisis for Nigel Farage. The party is facing criticism over organizing a contentious energy bill competition offering free energy for a year to a lucky winner and their neighborhood.
A resident named June from Wigan was declared the winner, but other neighbors on her street claim they haven’t received any benefits. Nigel Farage shared a video on social media presenting flowers to June and her husband while Robert Jenrick, the party’s treasury spokesperson, displayed a large ceremonial check.
The competition drew attention when social media users noticed a photo of Nigel Farage with the winning couple at a Brexit event in 2019, raising suspicions that he may have known the winners in advance. The winning pair was later described as “loyal party members” in a local Reform UK post.
Some residents of St Malo Road in Wigan allege they have been left out of the prize distribution, despite assurances that each household would receive instructions on how to claim. One resident, Angie Ecclestone, expressed disappointment at not receiving any communication about her winnings.
Another neighbor, Matt Johnson, mentioned the rising energy costs and his expectation to be included in the promised prize for the entire street. Fraser Hayes, who is not a supporter of Reform, stated he would donate the winnings if he receives them.
The situation has escalated into a potential public relations disaster, with residents seeking clarity on whether Reform Party will fulfill its commitment. Reports indicate that only half of the residents on the street have been contacted regarding the prize.
In response, a spokesperson for Reform UK clarified that letters were delivered to some addresses and the remaining households can expect to receive their notifications soon. The party affirms its intention to honor the promise of paying for the whole road’s energy bills.
Amidst the controversy, Manchester police are investigating a complaint related to the energy bill competition. Nigel Farage has expressed confidence in his party’s compliance with electoral regulations, despite the ongoing scrutiny.
