Sir Olly Robbins has been at the center of controversy following his recent dismissal, drawing criticism from within the British government. Despite facing backlash from various factions, including Eurosceptics who accused him of hindering progress, Robbins spearheaded efforts in a challenging environment.
His journey in government service began in the Treasury in 1996, culminating in key advisory roles for several prime ministers, including Tony Blair and David Cameron. Notably, he handled sensitive matters as the deputy national security adviser, overseeing intelligence and security operations during critical events such as the Edward Snowden data leak.
Following a hiatus from government affairs, Robbins returned in 2025 to lead the Foreign Office, only to face swift termination over the vetting controversy involving Mandelson’s diplomatic appointment. Expressing deep regret over his dismissal, Robbins emphasized his dedication to public service and loyalty to his colleagues.
