On the eve of his tragic demise, John Price, aged 44, had forewarned his colleagues that if he failed to show up for work the next day, Katherine Knight would be the one responsible for his fate. When Price did not appear for his morning shift as expected, a coworker hurried to his residence and discovered blood splattered on the front door.
Authorities were promptly summoned, and upon entering the property in New South Wales, Australia, law enforcement encountered a truly horrifying scene. The interior was saturated with blood, with a human skin “pelt” hanging from a kitchen doorframe meathook, as recounted by former Sergeant Robert Wells.
Within the kitchen, investigators uncovered a pot on the stove containing Price’s head, cooked alongside vegetables. Portions of his flesh were found served on plates at the kitchen table, still warm, each dish accompanied by a note bearing the names of Price’s children, who were elsewhere that night.
Furthermore, in the living room, alongside Price’s decapitated torso, Katherine Knight, the perpetrator, was found fast asleep. Following the gruesome act, Knight allegedly consumed parts of Price’s flesh before ingesting sleeping pills.
Knight was subsequently hospitalized and taken into custody. The crime scene evidence was so graphic that the judge in her trial offered the jury the option to be excused. It was determined that Knight had stabbed Price a total of 37 times.
Due to the severity of the crime and Knight’s lack of remorse, Justice Barry O’Keefe sentenced her to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, marking the first instance in Australian history where a woman received such a punishment. O’Keefe emphatically stated that Knight should never be granted release and emphasized that she was undeserving of mercy.
Throughout the trial, distressing details about Knight’s tumultuous life surfaced, including a history of horrific abuse. Knight had endured severe sexual abuse during her youth, leading to a pattern of troubled relationships with men in her adult life, as noted by Luke Taylor, a former detective on the case.
Taylor speculated that Knight’s actions were fueled by a deep-seated animosity towards men, stemming from the traumas she endured in her formative years. The cycle of abuse and violence that plagued Knight’s life ultimately culminated in the tragic events that unfolded with John Price in 1998.
