An intruder, Kirk Holdrick, was apprehended as he disembarked from a ferry bound for Liverpool after attempting to break into actress Anya Taylor-Joy’s bedroom at a mansion in London. The incident occurred in February 2023 when Holdrick and another masked accomplice invaded the luxurious property, seemingly targeting the film star.
Taylor-Joy’s husband, Malcolm McRae, a rock musician, confronted the burglars and managed to secure himself and his wife behind a bedroom door. Armed with only a lamp, McRae bravely stood his ground as Holdrick and his partner tried to force their way into the bedroom with a crowbar.
Despite the intruders’ attempts, McRae successfully deterred them by claiming he was armed with a gun. Prosecutors suggested that the burglars’ focus on accessing the bedroom rather than stealing valuables indicated a deliberate intention to target the famous residents.
Following the failed burglary at Taylor-Joy’s residence, Holdrick and his associate carried out another break-in nine days later, where they threatened a woman and her daughter at gunpoint in Sandbanks. The criminals posed as police officers, threatening violence unless the family opened their safe.
Holdrick, a repeat offender with a history of armed robberies, had previously served a life sentence. After his latest crimes, he received an additional 12-year prison term for the Sandbanks robbery. Subsequently, he was sentenced to an extra three years for the burglary targeting Taylor-Joy and her husband.
Despite the traumatic experience, Taylor-Joy, known for her roles in “The Queen’s Gambit” and “Peaky Blinders,” made a public appearance at the Baftas just one week after the break-in. The incident occurred on February 12, 2023, while Taylor-Joy was at the London property with her husband and his bandmate, Kane Ritchotte.
The burglars were caught on CCTV climbing a wall into the property, triggering a security light, before attempting to break in. Holdrick left DNA evidence at the scene and footprints matching his shoes were found outside the bedroom.
Holdrick was arrested after disembarking from a ferry in April 2023 and initially denied involvement in the burglary. However, he later confessed to the crime in mid-December. During sentencing, prosecutors highlighted the celebrity status of Taylor-Joy and her husband, suggesting the break-in may have been a targeted attack due to the intruders’ direct approach towards the bedroom.
Holdrick’s criminal activities extended beyond the failed burglary at Taylor-Joy’s residence, as he and his accomplice carried out a violent robbery at the home of businessman Mark Aitchison shortly after. They threatened the family with an imitation firearm, stole valuable items, and left behind incriminating evidence.
Holdrick, with a history of burglary offenses, pleaded guilty to robbery, possession of an imitation firearm, and fraud in Bournemouth. He received a 12-year prison sentence, to run concurrently with his life term, and an additional four years on license if released.
