“British Expats in Dubai Stay Calm Amid Iranian Attacks”

Date:

A diverse community of around 250,000 British nationals resides in Dubai, including business professionals, influencers, and retirees. Despite facing bombardment from Iranian drones and missiles in recent times, many residents in Dubai appear calm. Poppy Owen, an expat living in the exclusive Damac Hills area near the UAE’s Minhad Airbase, expressed experiencing fear and anxiety during the attacks. She highlighted concerns about debris falling from explosions rather than the explosions themselves, prompting her to take precautions, especially for her young children’s safety.

Poppy, originally from North Wales, expressed confidence in Dubai’s missile defense systems. She emphasized the proximity of the defensive measures launched from Minhad Airbase as a significant worry. While trying to shield her children from panic, Poppy explained how she reassured them that the sounds and flashes in the sky were just part of a special fireworks display.

Dubai’s defensive shield has managed to intercept the majority of incoming threats, although some iconic buildings like the Fairmont The Palm hotel and the Burj Al Arab have sustained damage. Notably, Dubai International Airport and Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport were reportedly targeted, with one casualty reported at the latter.

Yasser Elsheshtawy, a Columbia University architecture professor and former Dubai resident, expressed concerns about the city’s tarnished image due to the attacks. He noted that even limited damage to landmark structures could have lasting reputational repercussions for Dubai.

Poppy shared her experience of living under lockdown-like conditions amid the attacks, following government advice to stay indoors and protect themselves. Despite considering leaving the country, she and her husband have chosen to remain in Dubai for the time being, emphasizing the importance of staying indoors and riding out the situation.
