A woman from Highgate, identified as Polly Murphy, has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her partner, James Self, in a hotel in Clacton. The incident occurred on November 8, 2023, where Murphy attacked Self, leading to severe injuries. Despite waiting 18 hours before seeking medical help for Self, Murphy only mentioned a possible broken leg to the ambulance service. Medical examination later revealed that Self had endured a prolonged assault involving punching, kicking, and stomping.
Tragically, James Self succumbed to his injuries six weeks later in the hospital on December 21, 2023. Murphy was found guilty of his murder on January 13, 2026, at Chelmsford Crown Court and was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 15 years.
Detective Anthony Kopf from the Essex and Kent Serious Crime Directorate, who oversaw the investigation, expressed that while the legal proceedings cannot replace the loss felt by James’ family, he hopes it brings some closure to their painful experience. The court heard how Murphy had subjected James to both physical and emotional abuse leading up to the fatal incident in Clacton.
The successful prosecution was credited to the collaborative efforts of law enforcement officers, medical experts, and prosecutors. The relentless two-year investigation left no room for doubt in court, leading to a swift conviction of Murphy for murder.
