Kaavan, known as the ‘world’s loneliest elephant,’ endured 35 years in chains at Maraghazar Zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan. After losing his companion Saheli in 2012, Kaavan lived in isolation, confined to a small enclosure exposed to extreme heat without adequate shelter.
His living conditions deteriorated over time, leading to physical and mental distress. Kaavan’s keeper acknowledged his unhappiness, attributing it to lack of enrichment and social interaction. Concerned individuals rallied for his relocation to a sanctuary for better care, supported by celebrities like Cher.
Despite zoo officials claiming Kaavan was no longer chained, allegations surfaced of mistreatment, including beatings to manage his behavior. Observers noted signs of mental distress, such as repetitive head movements. Following a legal battle, a court ordered Kaavan’s transfer to Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary in July 2020.
In November 2020, Kaavan was successfully moved to Cambodia, marking a joyous moment for supporters worldwide. Cher joined the celebration, expressing her happiness. Accompanied by veterinarians, Kaavan was flown to his new home, where he was welcomed with treats and introduced to other elephants for the first time in years.
Now settled in his new sanctuary, Kaavan is thriving and exploring his lush surroundings. The sanctuary staff reported positive progress in his behavior and emphasized the importance of social interaction for elephants’ well-being. Government officials pledged to ensure Kaavan’s happiness in his new home.
