Twilight Zone: The Movie will always be remembered for a tragic incident that occurred during its filming. Adapted from the popular TV series and co-directed by renowned filmmakers Steven Spielberg, John Landis, George Miller, and Joe Dante, the movie featured a scene where actor Vic Morrow’s character, Bill Connor, was supposed to rescue two children from a helicopter. Unfortunately, a fatal accident took place during the shoot, resulting in the deaths of all three individuals involved.
The catastrophic event occurred at 2:20 am on July 23, 1982, in Indian Dunes, California. Morrow, aged 53, was tasked with carrying child actors Myca Dinh Le, seven, and Renee Shin-Yi Chen, six, away from a helicopter flown by Vietnam veteran Dorcey Wingo. The tragedy unfolded when a pyrotechnic effect meant to simulate a mortar explosion went off prematurely, hitting the helicopter’s tail rotor and causing the aircraft to lose control.
The helicopter, weighing 2,500 kilograms, crashed to the ground, leading to Morrow and Le being fatally struck by the rotor blades. Chen, narrowly escaping the blades, was tragically crushed by the helicopter’s body. The children’s parents, present on set during filming, witnessed the horrific incident, unaware of the dangers involved.
Following the accident, it was revealed that Landis had breached child labor regulations to involve the children in the scene without informing safety personnel. Subsequently, Landis and four others faced a 10-month trial but were ultimately acquitted of manslaughter, marking the first instance of a film director being prosecuted for an on-set tragedy.
Despite facing criticism and legal proceedings, the movie resumed production and was released in theaters on June 24, 1983. While receiving mixed reviews, it garnered commercial success, grossing $42 million against a $10 million budget. Spielberg, who distanced himself from the project, expressed his disapproval of Landis’s actions and ended their friendship shortly after.
