Protesters are urging the King to safeguard the monarchy’s reputation by compelling Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to provide testimony in the US, even if it means personally escorting him to the airport. This call was made by the Women’s March group during a vigil at the Washington Monument commemorating the late Jeffrey Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre on the anniversary of her passing. The event was attended by activists and members of Giuffre’s family, coinciding with the upcoming state visit of Charles and Queen Camilla to the US to meet President Donald Trump.
Critics argue that the Royals’ failure to engage with Epstein survivors has cast a shadow over their upcoming trip. Nevertheless, the Queen is scheduled to meet with other survivors of sexual abuse during the visit.
While Buckingham Palace recently defended the decision for the King and Queen not to meet with Epstein’s victims, citing concerns about prejudicing ongoing investigations, the Women’s March executive director, Rachel O’Leary Carmona, emphasized the importance of taking a stand. She urged King Charles to intervene and ensure that Andrew cooperates with investigators to shed light on Epstein’s crimes during his visit to the US.
The vigil also saw the presence of at least nine Epstein survivors, including Anouska de Georgiou, the first known British accuser of Epstein. She recounted being lured into Epstein’s world at a young age and enduring years of abuse.
Sky Roberts, Virginia’s brother, expressed the need for the King and Queen to meet with survivors to acknowledge their suffering and struggle for justice. Virginia Giuffre, before her tragic death, had accused Prince Andrew of sexual assault, leading to a settlement between them in 2022.
In response to mounting pressure, the King took decisive action to strip Andrew of his royal titles and honors following contentious allegations surrounding his association with Epstein. The King also pledged support for police investigations involving his brother.
Regarding the decision not to meet with survivors, Buckingham Palace emphasized the necessity of avoiding any actions that could impact ongoing legal proceedings. The Palace reiterated that the King’s constitutional responsibilities necessitate caution to safeguard the survivors’ pursuit of justice.
The King and Queen are set to commence their visit by meeting with the US President and First Lady at the White House, followed by engagements in Congress and a State Dinner. The visit aims to strengthen ties between the two nations amidst geopolitical challenges.
