A young parent, who tragically died alongside his girlfriend in a suspected suicide pact, had previously attempted to end his own life. The bodies of Jack Williams, 18, and Katherine Powell, 17, were found at Bothenhampton reservoir in Dorset on January 25, 2022. Before their deaths, the couple had been apprehended for allegedly possessing an indecent image of a child.
During a court session, Mr. Williams’ mother, Debbie Williams, shared that her son had faced struggles from a young age, having shown signs of ADHD and autism by 2016. His mental health deteriorated, leading to a suicide attempt in 2017. Despite efforts to seek support from mental health services, Debbie Williams found it challenging to access the necessary assistance for her son’s conditions.
Jack eventually met Katherine at school, forming a close bond. However, his behavior continued to worsen over the years, marked by substance abuse and further suicide attempts. Debbie Williams eventually made the tough decision to place Jack in foster care, hoping to provide him with better care and support.
Following Jack and Katherine’s disappearance, Debbie Williams expressed regret that she was not informed about concerns of suicide, as she could have provided crucial information based on her son’s past struggles. The devastating news of Jack’s death was delivered to his family by the police the day after their disappearance.
Mr. Williams’ father, Mark Williams, described his son as a cherished individual, sharing moments of vulnerability and challenges faced by Jack. Despite maintaining contact with his son, Mark Williams revealed that Jack had declined seeking professional help for his mental health issues.
The inquest into the tragic incident is set to continue at a later date.
