A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of her girlfriend over 15 years ago. Anna Podedworna, a skilled butcher, was found guilty of bludgeoning her partner, Izabela Zablocka, to death before dismembering her with a knife and burying her in their garden in Derby.
Zablocka, a 30-year-old mother, went missing in August 2010, leading her family to report her disappearance to the police. It wasn’t until a Polish journalist interviewed the family that Podedworna eventually confessed to the crime in 2025, prompting a search of their property where human remains were discovered.
The court convicted Podedworna of murder, perverting the course of justice, and preventing a lawful burial. The judge emphasized the severity of the crime, highlighting the emotional impact on Zablocka’s family, especially her daughter who was left traumatized by her mother’s mysterious disappearance.
The tragic events unfolded in 2009 when the couple, originally from Poland, moved to the UK and worked at a poultry factory before residing in Princes Street, Normanton. Podedworna’s brutal actions caused immense suffering to Zablocka’s family, who were deprived of closure until the discovery of her remains.
Despite Podedworna’s claims of self-defense, the court heard how she callously disposed of Zablocka’s body and deceived everyone about the whereabouts of her partner for years. Only after a charity and journalist intervened did the truth come to light, leading to Podedworna’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
The judge handed down a minimum sentence of 20 years and 116 days, emphasizing that Podedworna’s lack of remorse and deceitful behavior prolonged the agony for Zablocka’s loved ones.
