Iran has suffered another blow as one of its top leaders was killed in a targeted strike following his televised threat against the United States. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that their spokesperson, Ali Mohammad Naini, was assassinated in a joint operation by the US and Israel. Naini, who had been the IRGC’s spokesperson since 2024, was described as a martyr in a statement released by the IRGC.
The series of high-profile assassinations in Iran continued with Naini’s death, which came shortly after he appeared on national TV emphasizing Iran’s missile production capabilities even during wartime. The recent killings have included the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was succeeded by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, along with other key figures like Ali Larijani, Brigadier General Gholamreza Soleimani, and Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib.
In a separate incident, an Iranian man and a woman were arrested after attempting to access the HM Naval Base Clyde, known as Faslane, where the UK’s nuclear submarines are stationed. The pair, lacking security passes, were found acting suspiciously and subsequently detained by authorities. The Royal Navy confirmed the arrests and stated that the matter is under ongoing investigation.
Faslane serves as a crucial base for the UK’s Trident-armed ballistic missile submarines and houses the Royal Navy’s nuclear-powered attack submarines capable of launching precision strikes with Tomahawk cruise missiles. The incidents have raised concerns about security breaches and unauthorized access to sensitive military facilities.
