Tragic Climbing Incident at St Govans Head: One Fatality

Date:

A group of three climbers faced an emergency situation at a picturesque location in the UK, prompting a rescue operation. The incident took place at St Govans Head in Pembrokeshire, where the Coastguard coordinated a significant response. The alarm was raised at approximately 4 pm, leading to the deployment of coastguard teams from Fishguard, St. Govans, and Tenby, along with HM Coastguard and Irish Coastguard helicopters, a Wales Air Ambulance, and an RNLI lifeboat.

A Coastguard spokesperson confirmed the incident, stating that the rescue operation involved multiple teams and resources responding to the climbers’ distress at St Govans Head on the same day.

Following the incident, Dyfed-Powys Police reported that one of the climbers had tragically passed away. The authorities were alerted by the ambulance service regarding the situation at St Govans Head, leading to a coordinated response involving various agencies. While two individuals were taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, one person was pronounced dead at the scene. The police confirmed that the death was not deemed suspicious and that the deceased’s family had been notified.

Although a lifeboat was launched from the RNLI’s Angle Lifeboat Station, it is unclear whether it was directly involved in the rescue operation.

St Govan’s Head is renowned for its limestone cliffs and stunning views of the Irish Sea, making it a popular spot for climbers in Pembrokeshire. The area is also notable for St Govan’s Chapel, a historic 13th-century structure nestled within a cliff crevice.

Visitors can explore a 4.4-mile circular trail leading to the secluded chapel, accessed via a steep descent down weathered stone steps to the shore.

In a previous incident last August, a rock climber was rescued after falling from a cliff near Saddle Head in Pembrokeshire. The climber was airlifted to a hospital in Cardiff for treatment after the maritime authorities confirmed the incident.
