“NATO Jets Respond to Massive Russian Drone Assault on Ukraine”

Date:

NATO fighter jets were once again mobilized today in response to an unprecedented daytime drone assault launched by Russia against Ukraine. The attack, involving 400 drones targeting the western regions of Ukraine, marked a significant escalation in hostilities. Ukrainian authorities reported a record-breaking deployment of 948 drones since the previous evening, causing widespread damage and casualties.

In Lviv, a historic UNESCO site, the Bernardine monastery, sustained damage during the drone attack, prompting neighboring Poland to deploy fighter jets and aircraft from allied nations into its airspace, situated just 45 miles from the Ukrainian border. In response to the Russian Shahed drones’ activities in western Ukraine, Poland’s operational command confirmed the activation of fighter aircraft, a helicopter, and heightened air defense measures.

The strikes resulted in at least 13 injuries in Lviv, with seven individuals requiring hospital treatment, according to Mayor Andriy Sadovyi. Additional drone attacks targeted Ternopil, Vinnytsia, and Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, with reports of a maternity hospital being hit. Governors of affected regions confirmed casualties, with fatalities and injuries reported in Ivano-Frankivsk and Vinnytsia.

Ukrainian air force spokesperson Yuriy Ignat described the onslaught as one of the largest attacks of the day, involving over 400 attack drones. Concurrently, fighter jets were deployed earlier in Romania, another NATO member state, as Russian drones targeted Ukraine along the Danube River border.

Denis Kazansky, a Ukrainian war commentator, condemned the attacks on Lviv’s historic landmarks, emphasizing the destructive nature of the Russian drone assaults. He criticized Russia as a “rotten” and “barbaric” state, accusing it of destroying cultural heritage and civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

The utilization of Shahed drones, supplied by Iran to Russia, has been a prominent feature of Moscow’s military operations since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. These drones offer a cost-effective means for Russia to conduct aerial assaults, overwhelming defenses and causing extensive damage at a fraction of the cost of traditional missiles.

The Russian-manufactured version of the Shahed, known as “Geran,” has significantly increased Russia’s drone capabilities, enabling the mass deployment of drones in a single operation. This technological advancement has allowed Russia to conduct large-scale drone attacks with unprecedented frequency and intensity in the ongoing conflict.
