“Fear and Violence: Woman Assaulted by Drunken Man”

Date:

In a violent incident, a woman was assaulted when a drunken man aggressively slammed her head against the bedroom walls.

Andrew Gray, aged 43 and hailing from Nottingham, was accused in Nottingham Crown Court of refusing to transport the woman to a hospital after attacking her. Instead, he used Sellotape to conceal the wounds he had caused. Later, Gray, a father of two, proceeded to kick the same woman in the ribs and punch her in the face after consuming vodka, following which he fled the scene. The victim expressed living in constant fear post the assaults, likening Gray’s demeanor to that of “the Incredible Hulk”.

During the assaults, Gray had recently been released from a six-year prison term for a robbery where he menaced a woman with a machete in her residence while her young child was present, as disclosed by Nottinghamshire Live.

Judge Philip Head sentenced Gray to two years and nine months in prison, emphasizing that Gray’s history of violence was primarily linked to his alcohol abuse.

According to the prosecutor, David Allan, the initial assault occurred at the victim’s Nottingham residence on May 30 of the previous year. Gray engaged in an argument with her upon her return from her father’s memorial service, subsequently following her upstairs and assaulting her.

Mr Allan detailed the incident: “She reported that he seized her by the hair, forcefully moving her around and smashing her into the walls. She mentioned being pushed to the ground, where he stomped on her ribs and face, causing her to lose consciousness. He then prevented her from seeking medical help and instructed her not to disclose the reason for her injuries to her friend.”

A month later, on June 30, another altercation transpired between the two after consuming alcohol, during which Gray “repeatedly kicked her in the stomach and face,” as stated in court.

The victim, in her impact statement, conveyed experiencing persistent nightmares to the extent that she avoided sleeping, characterizing Gray as ‘like the Incredible Hulk’ and expressing her fear. She mentioned collaborating with Nottingham City Council to secure a safe residence.

Gray, residing in Abercarn Way, Bulwell, pleaded guilty to charges of assault causing bodily harm and common assault. His criminal record includes 45 prior offenses, including the 2018 machete robbery and two other incidents of domestic violence.

Lucky Thandi, representing Gray, highlighted that he had been in custody for the past eight months. She commented: “There is certainly another side to him. His prolonged struggle with alcohol has been evident. He has adult children and a supportive network, but his conduct restrains him, and only he can rectify that.”

The judge also issued a three-and-a-half-year restraining order against Gray.
