A woman faced backlash online for claiming she was unfairly prevented from boarding a flight due to a common passport error. Charlotte Taundry was set to travel from Birmingham Airport to Dublin with Ryanair when she was informed at the gate that her passport was not valid.
Despite the passport displaying an expiration date of October 2026, airline staff stated it could not be accepted because it was issued in January 2016, exceeding the 10-year validity limit for travel to many European destinations. Charlotte argued that her passport was still valid, citing an extra nine months carried over from a previous document – a practice allowed before Brexit.
She mentioned that she had recently visited various European cities, including Berlin, Paris, and Amsterdam, using the same passport without any issues. Nevertheless, she was denied boarding the Dublin flight as staff considered the document outdated according to current regulations.
Charlotte, residing in Staffordshire, initially accepted the decision, assuming the rule applied to Ireland. However, after sharing her experience online, she learned that Ireland operates under its own entry requirements and is not part of the Schengen Area, making the 10-year rule not directly applicable.
Following the incident, social media users criticized Charlotte for misunderstanding the rules, while some questioned the airline’s handling of the situation. A video of Charlotte Taundry discussing the incident garnered 258,000 views, with users clarifying the specific regulations for UK/Ireland travel.
Attempts to seek clarification from Ryanair regarding the issue have been made by Charlotte, but she has not yet received a response.
