British Diver Dies in Indonesian Riptide Tragedy

Date:

A tragic incident unfolded as a British diver was caught in a riptide and subsequently discovered deceased, leaving his family devastated. Robert Ladd went missing after venturing into hazardous waters off the Indonesian coast without a boat on March 24. His body was later recovered following an encounter with the dangerous “Indonesian Throughflow.”

The 45-year-old, hailing from Hillingdon, West London, was diving near Gili Air, a secluded island in the Lombok region of West Nusa Tenggara. Concern arose when he failed to return from his dive, prompting loved ones and local dive teams to raise an alarm, leading to an extensive search and rescue operation.

Robert’s lifeless body was found at a depth of approximately 12 meters near his diving location. Despite paramedics’ efforts to resuscitate him on the shore, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was then transferred to Bhayangkara Hospital in Mataram for a post-mortem examination.

A significant rescue effort was initiated, involving various agencies such as regional marine police, the military, Air Navy teams, local police, fire and rescue units, disaster management authorities, and volunteers. The coast of Gili Air is notorious for its strong riptides attributed to the Indonesian Throughflow phenomenon.

Heartbroken family members have expressed their grief online, paying tribute to Robert. Joanne McCallum mourned the loss, emphasizing his significance as a partner, brother, son, uncle, nephew, cousin, friend, and a beloved member of the Manta Dive family. She fondly remembered him and expressed love and sorrow for his untimely departure.
