Storm Pedro has been named and is expected to bring wintry showers and heavy rain to the UK today and tomorrow. Some regions could see up to 15cm of snow accumulation by Thursday morning.
The forecast warns of treacherous road conditions, potential stranded vehicles, and possible delays or cancellations for rail and air travel. Rural communities may face isolation, power outages, and disruptions to mobile phone services.
Areas in Wales, central England, and the southern Pennines are at risk of snowfall from 4pm today until 6am tomorrow, with icy patches forming, increasing the likelihood of slips and falls.
Higher elevations in mid and southeast Wales, Herefordshire, Shropshire, and the southern Pennines may see 10-15cm of snow, while lower areas could experience lighter accumulations. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and check for closures to avoid being stranded.
The Met Office recommends packing essentials like warm clothing, food, water, a blanket, a torch, and an ice scraper in vehicles in case of delays. Residents in affected areas should also prepare for power outages by having torches, batteries, and other necessities on hand.
Storm Pedro is forecasted to bring widespread rainfall of 10-20mm across the UK, with some areas near the south coast expecting up to 30mm. Dartmoor, Devon, could receive up to 50mm of rain. Northern Ireland will experience rain, hill snow, and gusts of up to 55mph.
Additionally, a yellow ice warning is in place for Wales and parts of the West Midlands from 9pm today until 10am tomorrow. Residents are advised to leave home earlier to reduce the risk of accidents due to icy conditions.
