An urgent advisory has been issued to travelers regarding potential threats to hotels from Iran or Iran-affiliated groups in the Middle East. The US Department of State Consular Affairs is monitoring reports of dangers targeting areas where American citizens congregate in Saudi Arabia.
The department cautioned American citizens that hotels, as well as other gathering spots such as US businesses and educational institutions, could be at risk. This warning aligns with a previous Worldwide Caution Security Alert dated March 22, advising increased vigilance for Americans globally.
In response to the perceived threats, the US Embassy in Riyadh has instructed all US government staff to remain indoors, urging all Americans in Saudi Arabia to do likewise until further updates. The directive emphasized staying inside residences or secure structures and avoiding windows whenever possible.
For those seeking to depart the Middle East, the department assured that the US government stands ready to provide information on available exit options. Saudi airspace remains functional but subject to frequent restrictions due to ongoing missile and drone threats. Passengers are advised to directly check flight statuses with airlines due to potential flight disruptions.
Meanwhile, an American journalist, identified as Shelly Kittleson, has been abducted by an armed group in Baghdad. The Iraqi Interior Ministry confirmed the incident and disclosed ongoing efforts to locate the perpetrators and secure the journalist’s release. Notably, Elizabeth Tsurkov, a graduate student, was previously kidnapped by an Iran-aligned Shia militia group in Iraq, and she was successfully freed after an extensive rescue operation.
